about

Joseph Panzetta | Multi-media Designer, Art Director

Over my 20 years of graphic design and multi-media marketing experience, I’ve been on all sides of the process. I’ve been an independent contractor, I’ve worked for a creative agency, and I’ve been the client hiring the creative resources. I’ve worked side-by-side with senior executives at one of the worlds largest companies, and I’ve been the sole creative resource for a startup of 20 people. I excel at story-telling, project management, and working well with others. I love working within a team to define goals and vision, develop nuanced messaging, and deliver world class creative.

Art Direction

Creative ideation.
Efficient project management.
Brand continuity.

I approach design through two methodologies that are lockstep with each other: information design, and visual design, both of which are guided by what I call an “economy of form.” I always ask what the visual information – both words and graphics – immediately communicate, and strive for a balance of aesthetics and efficient, intuitive communication. The key is necessity. Eye-candy is fun, but any visual element that’s not supporting meaningful content is really just noise. And likewise, content is most effective when it’s succinct and clear, organized in an intuitive way, and supported by engaging and appealing visuals.

Philosophy aside, art direction is also about effective project management, which ideally accommodates creative exploration/play while utilizing efficient production techniques to meet deadlines. And of course, specific deliverables need to fit within the larger picture of brand.

I think the best part of art direction is working within a team. As my father likes to say, “no one is as smart as everyone.” I love guiding teams towards a common goal.

Video Production

Clear messaging.
Engaging visuals.
Motion-graphics.

Videos are one of the most effective ways of communicating, but there are a lot of variables in play and budgeting is an art form because of the wide range of potential production costs. I know how to balance marketing goals and budget constraints to create cost effective videos that communicate powerfully. I have project managed engagements with high-end video production agencies, and I have been a one-man show, doing everything myself from scripting all the way through final production.

I know how to guide the process from goal – to concept – to storyboard – to completion, whether it’s making a motion-graphic video myself with modified stock assets, or managing a team on live shoots and high-end production.

website design examples

I started designing websites in the late 90’s as an interactive designer at an ad agency in Boston. Back then, Flash was all the rage, and I did a lot of work with motion-tween, time-line animations. One of the most interesting projects was an interactive piano I built for the Jazz Association of America website. Later, as a freelancer, I created numerous websites for small businesses, Penguin Press authors (including Al Franken.com), musicians and artists.

During my 8 years at Atigeo, I was the webmaster for the corporate site and various product micro-sites. For most of that time, I did everything myself, including the visual design and development. Over those 8 years, I migrated the corporate website from HTML/Flash, to WordPress, to HTML5. I also managed the deployment of marketing automation campaigns in Marketo.

Since leaving Atigeo in August of 2016, I’ve designed websites for small businesses such as ronlybau.comelanveda.com and the start-up bevyup.com

Branding

Visual language.
Big picture integration.
Guideline definition.

branding

A visual brand starts with an understanding of the company vision, mission, values, goals and objectives. It culminates into a visual language that helps hold the overarching narrative.

I oversaw two rebranding exercises while at Atigeo, giving me a strong understanding of how a visual brand is cornerstone to a company and its’ product identity, and how to translate the brand vision into styles, guides and templates.

presentation and collateral design

I’m particularly adept at understanding complex technical scenarios, and making them accessible to the layman through illustrations and custom graphics.

I have a lot of experience creating branded templates in Microsoft Word and PowerPoint that empower others to create their own assets that meet visual brand standards.

UI & UX

Intuitive flow.
Targeted outcomes.
Information design.

Successful User Interface and User Experience is dependent on four design components:

  1. šVisual Design – Pleasing “look & feel”
  2. šInteraction Design – Positive usability and experience
  3. šInformation Design – Efficient and intuitive experiential flow
  4. šConceptual Design – Solves a business problem

And each component should be crafted with these qualities in mind:

  • Intuitive – Uses familiar UX constructs and creates an experience that’s easily understood and efficient.
  • Useful – Solves business problems and is seamlessly integrated into the user workflow.
  • Clean – Has a visual symmetry that’s pleasing to the eye and on brand.
  • Pragmatic – Utilizes any existing in-house or open-source engineering tools or framework libraries. Don’t reinvent the wheel.

I have supported live events in many capacities including:

  • Trade show booth design
  • Speaker coaching
  • Peripherals like registration badges, branded lanyards and assorted swag
  • Looping videos of product demos

Mentoring

Enthusiasm.
Team work.

Leadership and mentoring

I was a member of the Senior Leadership Team at Atigeo, and participated in shaping the overall company strategy. I led the company through a “Company Values” exercise across several months that culminated in the introduction of a program to bring them to life.

I have worked personally with individuals wanting to learn breathing and meditation techniques within the corporate environment. I am a certified yoga teacher and taught regularly for 11 years, and am a meditation enthusiast. You can read an article I wrote about practicing mindfulness while commuting to work here.

I love mentoring junior designers who may have a lot of raw talent, but who can benefit from learning from the wide range of experience I’ve had as a designer and human being.

testimonials

Joe worked for me to design beautiful presentations for Bill Gates’ speeches. His slides were always clear, coherent, and enhanced the key messages without being distracting. Joe himself is easy and fun to work with and would always go the extra mile to ensure that his work was world-class.
Roan Kang, Former Speech Writer for Bill Gates, Microsoft

I had the privilege of working with Joe for 1.5 years at Atigeo. He was great to work with and a tremendous asset to my organization. He excelled at art direction and project management across numerous domains, and showed great leadership in spearheading a company-wide exercise on Company Values. Without a hesitation I would hire Joe again. His knowledge, spirit, integrity, and work ethic are an asset to any organization.

Alejandro Cabrera, CMO BevyUp

He fundamentally gets visual design, branding and storytelling – and has helped just about everyone at Atigeo get their point across different audiences & media over the past eight years. Joe has been consistently successful working with a broad set of personalities and can help anyone better communicate their brand and ideas.
David Talby, CTO Atigeo
Joe is an awesome creative talent and is extremely collaborative and fun to work with. I had the pleasure of working with Joe for 2 1/2 years at Atigeo where he was VP of Creative, and he saved my bacon multiple times with his ability to turn around amazing exec level presentations on very short notice. I highly recommend Joe to any company looking to upgrade their content across multiple properties, channels and formats.
